In goods related services most of the wholesale businesses are in machinery and equipment wholesaling, food wholesaling and building supplies.  Wholesaling is concentrated mainly in the industrial areas of Tomago, Raymond Terrace and Salamander Bay.  Raymond Terrace has a number of machinery and motor vehicles businesses.

Transport and storage businesses are mainly road freight, road passenger transport, air transport and water transport and postal services. Tomago has the major concentration of transport and wholesale businesses and water transport businesses are located at the Nelson Bay Marina.

The major drivers of wholesale trade are regional population size and growth, the structure of industry in the region, increased tourist numbers and the growth in passenger numbers through the airport.

There has been significant growth in a number of transport and storage activities including air transport, with the expansion of the airport, and road freight with the continued growth in regional manufacturing and mining activity.

The outlook for these activities is positive because of the linkages to the key sectors (manufacturing, aviation, tourism) in the local economy.
